Knoxville’s Center Mall is closing. The official announcement came Thursday morning.
Also known as East Town Mall, the mall has been a fixture in East Knoxville for almost 35 years. With anchor stores leaving and safety concerns, the mall has been in financial trouble for years.
“This decision was not an easy one to make. The ownership of the property has determined that in order to create a space that Knoxville deserves the mall must be closed for redevelopment,” the release added.
Officials say they’re not filing for bankruptcy, but wouldn’t elaborate. It’s last day will be January 31st.
