Knox County Commision has passed a resolution to support the renaming of Clingman’s Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains.
That resolution passed in an eight to two vote yesterday (Monday).
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians tribe is pushing to restore Clingmans Dome to its original name, “Kuwohi”, which means mulberry place, can be the name of Clingmans Dome, which is the name their ancestors knew it as.
Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Smoky Mountains and is named after Thomas Clingmans who was a U.S. Senator and a commander for the Confederate Army.
The federal government will have the final say on the name change.
