Knoxville, TN (WOKI) UPDATE 2:00 P.M.: Multiple agencies are on the scene and a stretch of Kingston Pike is closed to traffic as cleanup is underway following a tractor-trailer spill Monday morning on North Peters Road.
Knoxville Fire Department officials say crews responded at approximately 11:45 Monday morning, confirming that the truck spilled hydrochloric acid in the roadway.
Kingston Pike is closed between Cedar Bluff and Ebenezer, and traffic is being diverted. Fire officials say North Peters Road could be closed for several hours into overnight depending on how much material is in the truck.
Police and fire officials are asking that you avoid the area and seek alternate routes if possible.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, hydrochloric acid “is corrosive to the eyes, skin, and mucous membranes.” Exposure can lead to eye, nose, and respiratory tract irritation.
