Great Smoky Mountains National Park Issues Burn Ban

Gatlinburg, Tn (WOKI) Campers, hikers and visitors in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park won’t be allowed to burn anything for the foreseeable future.

The National Park Service Thursday implementing a burn ban on both the Tennessee and North Carolina sides of the park.

The ban prohibits campfires and charcoal use; officials say individuals using picnic areas may continue to use cookstoves with compressed gas canisters and gas grills that feature an on/off switch.

“The NPS is collaborating with multiple agencies in response to current and predicted weather and fuel conditions,” park service officials said. “Visitors are urged to exercise extra caution while recreating on public lands, including national parks and national forests, in North Carolina and Tennessee when fire danger is elevated.”

The ban comes as the area is seeing continued dry conditions, low relative humidity and is under a high wind watch.
